What is a Mechanical Scale or Balance?
A mechanical scale or balance is simply a weighing instrument that can be used without a power supply, be it battery or electricity. They can come in many different shapes and sizes, such as a spring balance, hanging scale or triple beam balance. Our own TBB Triple Beam Balance relies on a system of sliders that act as counterweights to achieve accurate weighing results.
How Does a Triple Beam Balance Work?
Triple Beam Balances work by using a set of three sliders that act as counterweights to your weighing object. When all sliders are moved toward the weighing pan, your triple beam balance should give a 0 reading. When an object is placed on the pan the pointer will move to above the center mark. The 100g slider is then moved along the beam until the pointer drops below the mark. Move the slider back one increment so that the pointer moves above the mark again, before moving the 10g slider. Repeat this same process with the 10g slider and then finally move the 1g slider until the pointer moves level with the mark. Users would then take the three readings from the separate sliders and add them together to find the weight of their subject.

The main benefit of using mechanical scales and balances for education is that they do not require a power supply. This enables them to be used anywhere in the classroom and means users do not have to worry about locating a power supply or whether a battery is fully charged.
